Who’s Zeno?
Zeno of Elea (490-430 BC) was a pre-Socratics Greek philosopher who is best known for his paradoxes. His paradoxes have puzzled, challenged, influenced, inspired, infuriated, and amused philosophers, mathematicians, and physicists for over two millennia.
One of Zeno’s most famous paradox is about a race between Achilles, a man known for his running talents and a tortoise. In this story, Achilles has to beat the tortoise to a finishing line. The tortoise has a head start and Achilles has to catch him and overtake him. And here is the tricky part. Achilles can never catch him. As the race progresses, Achilles gets closer. However, by the time he gets to were the tortoise was, it has moved a little; and so on. The distance between them gets smaller and smaller. But every step Achilles takes, so the tortoise moves again, and so on to infinity. And why is this? Zeno was looking at the problem the wrong way.
The paradox resolves itself if you stop thinking about the shrinking distance between the two, and think in terms of time or the ultimate outcome; not points along the way. And how does this apply to IT and project management? With technologies ever evolving,
IT professionals and engineers often get stuck on the technical aspect (‘the new toy’): What does it do? How does it works? Which tech is better, etc? But many failed to consider the real intent and purpose. Technologies are meant to help us to improve quality of life and better outcome in business. Sometimes we need step outside the box, approach the problem holistically and check if we are doing the right thing.
